Bishop Museum Arts Market

Artists gathered at the Bishop Museum for another successful art's market this weekend.

The Market is seven years old and this was the most successful market in terms of sales of art.  My involvement in the martket is not sales but instead product development for new art work and to encourage people to support the artists in the museums and galleries.  The development of a strong patron base is vital to the fine arts  community in Hawaii.  Artists need to be consistent in selling original art and the market needs to move to ban copies from being sold because it sends the wrong message to the art buying public.

Artspace Kaka‘ako

Artspace is a nonprofit real estate development organization for the arts. Our mission is to create, foster, and preserve affordable space for artists and arts organizations. We have been invited by the PA'I Foundation (with funding from the Ford Foundation) to create an affordable artist housing project in Honolulu with space on the ground floor for the PA'I Cultural Arts Center.

The kick-off event, Tuesday May 22nd 6-8 PM, at ARTS at Marks Garage, is a great time for artists to come and learn more about the projects that have been created in other cities and ask questions about our first project in Hawai'i. If you have questions please do not hesitate to contact me at cathryn.vandenbrink@artsapce.org or 206-271-0380.

PARADISE WHAT

By Drew Broderick
Show closes Friday, May 18

Only 4 more days left to view Drew Broderick's Paradise What!

Paradise What, a slacker conceptual mash-up by artist Drew Broderick incorporates causal humor and metaphor to play off the ironic and historic context of exploitation and cultural re-appropriation of the "natives" -in this case, the coconut tree.
