Honolulu Micro Site Public Art Project

Mark's Garage, a gallery located on the corner of Pauahi and Nuuanu street in the arts district of Honolulu wanted to create curb appeal so they planted the grass and I provided the art.

The art work entitled Legacy and is on a busy corner and attracts lots of viewers.

The plan is to have a rotating art show on the lawn every three months.

I am working on a long term program model for more public art in Honolulu it will allow 3-D artists to share their work in public spaces fronting businesses.  If you have ideas or want to participate email me at Bob911rss@yahoo.com

The artist cites traditional Hawaiian culture, counter culture, and pop culture as sources of inspiration for his work. The clash, between these areas of endemic and invasive authority, is palpable. However, it is precisely this ability to arm himself, unapologetically, with bits and pieces of these seemingly contradictory conditions, which makes Tallettʼs work so forceful and timely.

Location: Arts at Marks Garage, Honolulu Hawaii 

June 7 to August 31, 2013

Concept : Three colored upright forms represent the diversity of people who live in Hawaii. The figures surround a stone which represents Hawaii the place we all call home. It is said that the small holes in the stone is where the first people came from. The uprights are all holding gray forms representing their offspring which come from a diverse range of cultural and racial backgrounds. As future generations grow up in Hawaii they will come to understand the rich legacy that the first people of Hawaii have left for all of us to enjoy.

Materials : wood, stone and steel; 7.5 X 2.25 X 2.25 ft

Micro Site Honolulu - a new approach

The Arts at Marks Garage will feature a public sculpture, by Bob Freitas, a local contemporary artist  in Honolulu.

The concept for the installation is based on Micro Sites, in New Zealand.  Micro Sites is a series of small, temporary public art projects by local artists that are intriguing, subtle and surprising discoveries for people living, working and walking through Auckland’s Learning Quarter. The Learning Quarter encompasses Albert Park, The University of Auckland, AUT University and surrounding streets and neighbourhoods.

The Micro Sites project was conceived as an opportunity for artists to create small-scale interventions that run against the grain or interfere with everyday perceptions and experiences of a place or neighbourhood.

Micro Sites is a public art initiative of Auckland City Council developed in partnership with The University of Auckland and AUT University.

"As a contemporary artist living and working in Honolulu I believe the city needs to consider alternative art spaces for sculptors to share their work, hopefully this effort will be the start of new opportunities for artists in Hawaii."

Kazu Kauinana and Russell Sunabe start off the new year!

Thursday, January 10 from 4:30pm to 7pm at Koa Gallery at Kapiolani Community College, Honolulu, Hawaii.

Kazu said 2012 was an enlightening year because of Maile Meyer, Noelle Kahanu and Vicky Holt Takamine.  My participation with Kanaka Maoli Ki'i Makers at Na mea, Mamo and the Bishop Museum has given me the encouragement to continue this series that began in 1998.

It should be a good show, you don't want to miss it!
