MAMo 2014 Group Show "ALOHA MY NAME IS..."
The ARTS at Mark’s Garage and PA’I Foundation presents, “ALOHA MY NAME IS…”.
Curated by Drew Broderick of SPF Projects.
OPENING RECEPTION:
Friday, May 2, 2014 6-8 pm, show runs to May 31, 2014.
Highlighting the work of 3 young emerging artists, Kahiau Beamer, Cory Taum,
and Keoni Paʻakaula, who have shared a studio together at Lana Lane Studios in
Kakaʻako for the past year, “ALOHA MY NAME
IS…” offers an “insider” perspective to art making through an
“outsider” approach. To supplement and contextualize the work of the
younger artists the exhibition also features the work of three established and
widely recognized Hawaiian artists from previous generations, Kazu Kauinana,
ʻImai Kalāhele, and Sam Campos, identified by Beamer, Taum, and Paʻakaula as
artists and Hawaiians that they look to for inspiration and guidance in their
own work. Through acknowledging and honoring the lineage that their work
is a part of and using the work of Kauinana, Kalāhele, and Campos as points of
departure, Beamer, Taum, and Paʻakaula comment on the changing times and the
evolution of Hawaiian art and art making through a healthy and engaged
intergenerational dialogue.
SPF Projects provides a venue
for contemporary art and theory in Honolulu.
With a focus on building the capacity for critically engaged art and dialogue
in the Islands, SPF is dedicated to developing
a cross-disciplinary and intergenerational program through the exhibition of
local, national, and international artists and thinkers. SPF PROJECTS 729 Auahi Street, Honolulu, HI 96813

"Contact" a new direction
"Contact" opened last night at the Honolulu Museum, Linekona Gallery and it is a powerful show featuring emerging and established artists who live and work in Hawaii. Congratulations to Maile Meyer and her team who made the show a reality.
Some of the artists featured include: Jessee Christensen, Kazu Kauinana, Leland Miyano, Harinani Orme, Solomon Enos, Kupaa Hee, Cory Taum, Jerry Vasconcellos, Mark Chai, Drew Broderick, Al Lagunero, Kahi Ching, Meleana Meyer, Kaui Chun, Kai Markell, Maya Portner, Nai'a Lewis, Ahakini Kupihe'a and many other artists.
Contact represents a new approach in art shows because it includes both native and non native artists who are motivated and inspired by living in Hawaii. The magic of this show is seen in the diversity of contemporary expression. You do not want to miss the show which will end on April 21, 2014. This is just the start of a new art tradition in Hawaii and hopefully the Honolulu museum and other Art institutions will recognize the value of supporting the artists via large scale group shows that showcase the diversity of contemporary fine art in Hawaii.
